The Great Wall of China is the true mascot or the symbol of the china; it covers several provinces of China, wild forests, mountains, Inner Mongolia. Ancient Chinese emperors sensed that there was a need of a barrier to protect the country and act as watch tower with easy transportation of weapons and guns. The Great Wall was built strategically nearly 2300 years ago to protect the country from the invasions and save the Silk Trade Route.  There are surveillance watch towers, beacon towers for communication and fortresses for command posts.  Every ruling dynasties of china contributed in making and developing this great man made barrier but it was the Ming dynasty which took it to anointer level. Over the course of time, the Great Wall has taken the toll of nature and human interference, so some portions of the wall was damaged and a lot had to be restored. There have been stories of brutality of the Chinese on the labors making the wall; thousands of them died are believed to be buried under the wall.

Climate: Humid continental climate. Spring lasts from March to May and can be windy with dust storms. You must pack warm jacket for this time. Summer is from June to August and has rains with possibilities of thunderstorms. Carry protective gear for the rains and the sun. Autumn in September to November is cool and clear, pack warm clothes for the chill. Winter months December- February are cold and windy requiring heavy warm clothes.

Best Time to Visit: March to May and September- November are the best time to visit. Avoid the first week of May and October due to the heavy rush.

 The Mutianyu part was built by the emperors of Northern Qi Dynasty from the year 550–577. This part of the Great Wall of China is about 73 kilometers from the capital Beijing; this is the part that is mostly overcrowded with tourists. This section of the wall has been restored completely and one can see how the wall would have looked in ancient time. This part of the Great Wall has 23 original style watch towers and parapets with open spaces that allowed soldiers to fire arrows at their opponents. This famous sightseeing part of the wall has many restaurants which serve Chinese style cuisine.

The Jinshanling part of the wall was built by the emperors of the Ming dynasty in the years 1368–1644, historical evidences like paintings and books describe the building and rebuilding phase of the wall. It has 31 watchtowers in different size and shapes and also battlement walls, shooting holes as well as other defense facilities. The wall offers easy climbing and hiking opportunity where you can go from Jinshanling to Simtai west. Take necessary precautions and prepare well for hiking this wall.

Jiankou

This part of the wall is notorious for its steepness and dangerous terrain, situated 100 km from Beijing. This part of the wall is known due to its precarious mountains but it is still visited by many adventure seekers due to its great style of construction and beautiful scenery. It is quite tough for hikers though this “w” shaped wall is a nice place for clicking photographs with amazing backdrop. It has many well known spots like Nine-eye Tower, Beijing Knot and Eagle flies facing upwards that are worth a visit.

Simatai

Location: Huairou, China

Timings: all days: 7:30 am to 5:30 pm

It is situated about 120 km from the Chinese capital Beijing.  This part of the Wall has succeeded to retain its originality from the past. It was built by the emperors of the Northern Qi Dynasty in the year 550–577. The cable services gives a nice view of the mountains at the top, this is a great place for photography with relatively less crowd. You can also go for a night tour for a unique experience. At the foot of the wall lies the Mandarin Duck Lake with Gubei water town that is present near the lake. It is a beautiful place to visit for its beauty.

The Badaling part of the wall is situated 60 km northeast of the Chinese capital Beijing. It was built in the 16th century and is connected to the capital city by an expressway. This part has been the center of attraction for tourists and has been visited by many celebrities and political dignitaries. It also had watch towers as it was a critical point, today there are many eating joints like KFC and McDonalds. There is also a Great Wall Museum as well as Great Wall National Theater close to this section of the Great Wall that are a must visit.
