HAFLONG (Assam)

Haflong is Assam’s one of the most beautiful destinations which is loved by tourists for its mountains and valleys. Situated 310 km from Guwahati, Haflong is located at an altitude of 680 m above sea level. With its fabulously beautiful hills, landscapes, valleys, and mountains, it is a place of attraction for campers and nature enthusiasts. Also known as white ant hillock, Haflong’s architecture reflects the British colonial past. Some of the places to visit in Haflong are the Orchid Garden, Borail Range, Maibong and Jatinga.

Haflong is also famous for its extremely beautiful handicrafts. The intricate cane and bamboo woven products crafted by the local artisans attract all visitors. You may like to pick up a few wooden handicraft items as souvenirs for you. Not only this, the local hand-woven textiles are also popular among tourists for their unique quality; you can easily buy some of this fabric. If you want to enjoy local cuisine, do try the tasty bamboo shoot pickle, it is quite different!

Climate: Uniformly cool temperaturewhich never dips to uncomfortable levels

How to reach: Kumbhirgram Airport is the nearest airport. Two direct trains and one bus service is also available from Silchar.

Haflong Hill

Location: within the town

With the scenic view of the adjacent mountains Haflong Hill is one of the major attractions of the town. The hill is popular for trekking and hiking mainly.  Being an ideal destination for those who love long walks in the midst of nature, it is also a popular spot for the picnic-monger families. It offers a great view of the surrounding valleys with its serene environment and the beauty of the hill itself. You can visit the Borail range and the Orchid Garden and enjoy the beauty of nature at its best.

Haflong Lake

Location: In the heart of the town

Being one of the largest natural water bodies of Assam, Haflong Lake is the most popular tourist spot in Haflong. It is a vast expanse of beautiful waters as an oasis of calm in the midst of hills.  It provides a majestic view of the Himalayas. Garampani, a spring of hot water is a major attraction for tourists who visit the lake. A large number of migratory birds visit the surroundings of the lake during winter. You can do boating here and absorb the celestial beauty of the lake and its surroundings.

Maibong

Location: 47 kilometres from Haflong

How to reach: The nearest railhead is situated at Guwahati, 338-km. The nearest railway station is located at Lamding.  Regular bus services ply to Maibong via Lamding

Best Time to Visit: October-March

At the bank of the Mahur River, Maibong is famous for its Ramchandi temple. The ancient centre for art and culture in Assam, it was the capital of the 17th century Dimasa Kachari Kingdom. You can enjoy the scenic natural beauty and grandeur of the place when you visit it. The landscape of the place will leave you enthralled and the ancient architecture will mesmerize you. The sculptures and stone carvings in the ruins reflect the excellent craftsmanship of the people of those times and will charm you beyond words.

Jatinga

Location: close to the Haflong ridge

Best Time to Visit:  January to April, August to December

On a spur of the Haflong ridge, Jatinga is another famous tourist spot. People visit this place more out of curiosity to see a strange phenomenon called “bird suicides”. At Jatinga, it is said that birds fly to this place attracted by the bright lights in the houses and then for some reason they get disoriented. As a result, they are unable to fly away and get killed by hunters. This strange happening takes place only when fogs and mild showers set in during the nights of September-October.

Silchar

Location:  About 105 km by road from Haflong.

How to reach: Silchar is very well connected through Assam State Road Transport Corporation and Silchar has its own railway station located in the Tarapur area

As the nearest city, Silchar offers a number of major attractions worth visiting. The beautiful crafted Bhuvaneshwar Temple is among the many must see places here. And the Badarpur Fort situated on the banks of Barak River is an important historic place of Barak valley. The Fort is about 16 km away from Badarpur Railway station.  Maniharan tunnel is only a few kilometers from Silchar and is a wonderful place for tourists.
