Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh

Khajuraho is a very popular tourist place having very old and ancient Hindu and Jain temples. These temples are known for the erotic sculptures spread around 6 square kilometres. All these temples were built in the 9th and 10th century. Khajuraho is small place with a population of around 22000 people. There are two popular religions in this area- Hinduism and Jainism. In 12th century, there were about 85 temples present but only 20 survived and restored.  Temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Devi Parvati, Vishnu, Rishabha, Devi Chausath Yogini, Parshvanath . These temples feature a very different kind of art work than the rest of the temples in India having sexual and erotic sculptures. They are part of UNESCO world heritage sites. Tourists are allowed to store this beautiful art work in their cameras and take the memories along.

Climate: Best months are July and March though can be visited throughout year. Rainy season pleasant and beautiful, with greenery all around, winters cold with warm afternoons. Summers hot with temperature that goes up to 47 degree Celsius though evenings are pleasant.

By Air- Domestic airport with daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal, Varanasi and Allahabad.

By Rail- Nearest big railway station from Khajuraho is Mahoba about 63KM away. Mahoba is very well connected with all major cities of India.

By Road- Situated near National highway 75 and very well connected with Bhopal. State transports buses, both AC and non AC connect the city with other parts of state.

Kandariya Mahadev Temple

Location- West part of Khajuraho

This temple is most famous and largest one in Khajuraho. Dedicated to Lord Shiva this temple has very beautiful statues of dikpalas, apsaras and surasundaries. It has around 900 sexual and erotic sculptures with amazing art work on outside walls and ceilings of the temple. It’s a UNESCO heritage building.

Lakshmana Temple

Location- West part of Khajuraho

The oldest temple of Khajuraho build by Chandela kings itself is very much popular for its marvels and amazing art work. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It has around 600 Gods sculptures on the outer walls and Vaikuntha-Vishnu statue inside

Adinath Temple

Location- Eastern part of Khajuraho

It’s a Jain temple and a symbol of strong presence of Jainism in Khajuraho. This temple is dedicated to Jainism founder Tirthankar Adinath. Marvellous statues of Yakshis are the centre of attraction of this temple.

Javari Temple

Location- Eastern part of Khajuraho

It’s a small but very beautiful temple situated in eastern part of Khajuraho. It is believed that this temple was named after the land owner Javari as this doesn’t have any Hindu deity.

Dance Festival

Khajuraho hosts a very famous classical dance festival every year in the months of February and March. It’s a weeklong festival where classical dancers from every part of country participate. Bharat Natyam, , Kucchipudi, Kathak, Oddissi,Kathakali, Manipuri and Mohiniattam are main dance forms performed by dancers.
