Ooty (Tamil Nadu)
A dazzling hill station and the capital of Nilgiris District, Ooty is popularly known as the ‘Queen of the Hills’. One of the most divine hill stations, Ooty is also called ‘Udhagamandalam’. Many centuries ago, Ooty was called ‘Oththai-Kal Mandu’. ‘oththai-Kal’ means ‘Single Stone’ and ‘Mandu’ means ‘Mund’ which is the name of a Toda village. Before anyone could venture Ooty, it was inhabited by a tribe called ‘Toda’. The British discovered this amazing destination and developed and modernized it in early 1800’s.
The elegant coffee and tea plantations and splendid trees like Eucalyptus, Pine, Wattle and Conifers add to the scenic beauty of this outstanding hill station. Ooty is also very famous for its thick forests, high mountains, lakes and tea gardens.
Location: It is located 80 kms North of Coimbatore, 19 kms from Coonoor, 31 kms from Kothagiri
Climate: During the summer season, weather is cool and pleasant. In winter season, the climate is trembling cold.
You will be comfortable in light cottons in summers. But wear heavy woolens to protect yourself from the chilling cold of winters.

Situated in the heart of Ooty, ‘Ooty Boat House’ which is also called ‘Ooty Lake’ is the central attraction of this Hill Station. It is a man-made lake, which was constructed in 1824 by John Sullivian. It is spread in an area of 65 acres. In 1973, the Tamil Nadu Tourist Development Corporation took over the possession of the lake, to make it as a major tourist attraction by providing boating facilities here.
Visitors can do paddling in gorgeous boathouses. They can enjoy row boats, paddle boats and motor boats in the calm, beautiful and peaceful lake. Every year during summers, a grand boat car race is organized in this lake.
Ooty Rose Garden
Location: 2 kms from the City Centre, on the slopes of the Elk Hill in Vijayanagaram of Ooty.
Timings: Open all days from 9.00 a.m.- 6.00 p.m.
An enticing place for rose lovers, Ooty Rose Garden is the largest Rose Garden in India. You will be intrigued to see the rose creepers growing in small tunnels, bowers and pergolas. This is the premier place for the production of a huge range of beautiful roses ranging from Hybrid Tea Roses, Miniature Roses, Floribundas, the unusual black and green roses and many more. You will be fascinated to see approx. 3,600 varieties of ecstatic roses in this garden.
This garden is maintained by Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department. The World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS) has recognized this garden as the ‘Garden of Excellence’. Every year, a rose festival is organized here at a very large scale.

Doddabetta is known as the ‘Highest Peak’ of this area and of South Asia. It is situated at an altitude of 2,623 meters. It offers a marvelous view of the surrounding areas, from the top of the peak. It is a very good trekking spot of Ooty, as it is just 10 kms from the city. The ‘Telescope House’ at the peak, run by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation, will enable you to have a better view of the divine surroundings.

Pykara Lake is a beautiful calm lake, situated far away from the city’s crowd and pollution. The dense forests around the lake are marvelous and mind blowing. It is the perfect place to relax and get rid from the bust city life. Lovely boathouses with restaurants will intrigue you, all the more. The 20 minutes ride on the motor boats and the 10 minutes ride on the speed boats will make your trip a memorable one.

The Toy Train is one of the popular tourist attractions of Ooty. It was built in 1908 under the British Government. People also call it by the name of ‘Nilgiri Mountain Railway’. It has a traditional steam engine. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Train travels a distance of about 46 kms in about five hours. The Train track has 13 tunnels and 208 curves. As the Train runs slow and gives the average of about 10 kms per hour only, due to safety reasons, it is the Slowest Train in India. But, you must have a ride in this train, to enjoy the marvelous natural beauty of the hills and the pleasing greenery.
