Renukaji (Himachal Pradesh)

Regarded as the embodiment of Renukaji, the wife of sage Jamadagini and mother of Parshuram, one of the ten Avtars of Lord Vishnu, this lake is shaped like the profile of a woman. With a circumference of 2.5 kms, Renukaji is the largest lake in Himachal. The calm and peaceful water of Renukaji is fed by underground springs. The hills surrounding the lake are the home of a large variety of plant and animal life. Apart from the scenic beauty, boating in the calm waters and trekking in the surrounding hills will also attract you the most.

Undoubtedly, Renukaji is a perfect destination to visit any time of the year and it attracts travellers not only in India, but around the world.

Climate: In summers, the temperature is usually high but the winters are pleasant.You can wear cottons in summers but carry light woollens if you go in winters.

Renuka Lake

Location: Near Parashuram Tal

As per the mythology attached to the lake, when the evil Sahasarjuna killed the sage Jamadagini and tried to abduct his wife Renuka, she having no other option to save herself, flung herself into the water. It is said that God restored her to life making the lake her embodiment, from then on. A row of temples along its banks beautify the lake spiritually and architecturally as well, with a track encircling the water. There are boats are available on hire, if you fancy a boat ride on the mythological lake.

Parashuram Tal and Renuka Temple  

Location: 100 metres from Renuka lake, at its base

Timings: Open 7 days from 6.00 a.m.-7.00 p.m.

How to reach: By road

This large pool is in the memory of Lord Parshurama, who used to love his mother so much that he even wished to spend all eternity at his mother's feet. It is believed that this pool was  built in just one night in early 19th Century, by an invading force of Gurkhas. In this original temple of Renukaji, a celebratory fair is held in November every year and it is said that both the mother and the son are reunited here.

Jamu Peak

Location: About 8 kms from Renuka lake

Timings: Best time to visit is from Sunrise to Sunset

How to reach: On foot

Jamu Peak is the peak where Rishi Jamadagini is said to have meditated. You have to follow a footpath leading to the peak here. There is also a small temple, which offers an excellent view of the lake and the surrounding area, which is impeccable for real.

Mini Zoo  

Location: 2 kms from the Renuka lake

Timings: Open all days from 9.00 a.m.- 5.00 p.m.

How to reach: By boat or by road

After boating or driving across the lake to this zoo, you are going to witness the world of spotted deer, lion tailed macaques, Asiatic lions, 'Nilgai' Methuen, barking deer and Himalayan black bears as well.

This is the oldest zoo of Himachal Pradesh. The first animal which was brought in the zoo was a male spotted deer called Moti. Gradually, more animals were added in the zoo.

Lion Safari  

Location: 2 kms from Renukaji

Timings: Every day from 9.00 a.m.- 5.00 p.m.

How to reach: By road

Lion Safari is beautifully mesmeric in the wild. Yes, adjoining the zoo, an armoured van takes you inside the jungle, entering the large enclosure. This kind of adventurous journey offers you wallowing for a close glimpse of the lions within the jungle, right before your eyes.

Jataun

Location: 5 kms away from Renukaji

Timings: Every day of the week

How to reach: By road

Jataun is the point of attraction for the visitors due to the presence of the dam of the Giri Hydel Project here. Not only this, the angling for Mahaseer (river carp) can also be enjoyed here.
