Popularly known as the ‘City of Lakes’, Udaipur is one of the most prominent holiday destinations of Rajasthan. The calm and beauteous city is mesmerizing with its elegant hills and marvelous lakes. City Udaipur got its name from the name of its founder, Maharana Udai Singh, who founded this dream city in 1553. Initially, it was the capital city of Mewar Empire. The royal and grand palaces of Udaipur will remind you of the Rajputana era.

Location: It is located in Rajasthan, 405 kms from Jaipur

Climate: Summer season is very hot and exhausting, while winters are pleasantly cool.

Light cotton clothes are preferable in summers. To cope up with the winter weather, you can carry light woolens with you.

Places of Interest

City Palace

Location: 5 kms from the city centre

Timings: Open all days of the week from 9.00 a.m.- 5.00 p.m.

City palace is one of the largest forts of Rajasthan. It was constructed around 400 years ago, by Maharana Udai Singh II. This historic palace was the residence of several Mewar Royal Dynasties. The Interior of the palace is a commendable fusion of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. You will be awestruck to see the Vintage Car Museum, the Crystal Gallery, Daawat-i-Khas, Daawat-i-Aam, Maharani Palace and the exotic view of the city of the City Palace.

The uniqueness of the Palace lies in the fact that one side of the City Palace is encircled by the beauteous Lake Pichola. If you really want to experience the royalty of Mewar Kingdom, then this is the best place to visit. The splendid Mewar Light and Sound Show, organized every evening is worth watching.

Manmade Lakes

Location: In Udaipur

Best month to visit: September to March

Known as the ‘City of Lakes’, Udaipur is famous for its beautiful manmade lakes, in which Lake Pichola and Lake Fateh Sagar are the two major lakes. Both the Lakes look exotic, as they have small islands in the centre. You can reach there by taking an enjoyable an fascinating ride of the boats. You must also explore the Jag Mandir, located in an inland of Lake Pichola and the Nehru Park, which is located in the heart of Fateh Sagar Lake. Apart from the two lakes, Udai Sagar Lake, Jaisamand Lake, Rajsamand Lakes are also mind blowing. Badi ka Talab, Doodh Lake and Kumharia Lakes are the smaller lakes which also form the sources of water for the city.

Saheliyon ki Bari

Location: 4.4 kms from the city centre, on the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake

Best month to visit:  September to March from 9.00 a.m.- 7.00 p.m.

Saheliyon ki Bari is a popular garden of Udaipur. Basically, the word ‘Saheliyon ki Bari’ means ‘Garden of Maidens’. It was constructed by Maharana Bhopal Singh. This garden was gifted by the King to his beloved Queen. It is said that the Queen and her 48 attendants used to spend delightful moments in this garden. Exotic Bird Fountains, admirable Lotus Pool, magnificent Marble Arts and the splendid green lush areas are the main tourist attractions of the garden. 

Jagdish Temple

Location: 4.6 kms from the city centre, inside the City Palace Complex of Udaipur

Timings: Open all days from 4.15 a.m.- 1.00 p.m., 5.15 p.m.- 8.00 p.m.

Jagdish Temple is a major and ancient Hindu Sanctuary in Udaipur.  It was constructed by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1651 A.D. This temple is dedicated to Lord Laxmi Narayana. This beautiful three-storey structure was built in Indo- Aryan architectural style. The black stoned deity of Lord Vishnu and the brass image of Garuda, Vishnu’s vehicle will leave your soul and mind with peace. The pillars and walls of the temple are decorated with attractive carvings and exquisite sculptures. Do not miss to attend the Aarti that takes place at the Temple every day, at Sunrise or Sunset.

The Monsoon Palace

Location: About 11 kms from Udaipur

Timings: Open every day from 9:30 a.m.- 6:30 p.m.

The Monsoon palace is also known as ‘Sajjan Garh Palace’. It was constructed on the top of Bansdara Mountain, in 1884 by Maharana Sajjan Singh. The King had planned to make the place as an astronomical centre, but the plan got cancelled because of the King’s premature death. It is still an intriguing place which offers an astounding view of the surrounding areas and the city.

The interiors of the charming and elegant white-painted Monsoon Palace have been used in a lot Hindi movies and T.V. shows. This palace and other locations of Udaipur was used as a shooting site in a James Bond movie.
