Beautiful nature, lush green mountains and the giant blue ocean: Yes, we are talking about ‘The Faroe Islands’. It is a self governing archipelago. It is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It contains 18 rocky volcanic islands between Iceland and Norway, in the North Atlantic Ocean. You can reach these exotic islands easily, as it is well connected by road tunnels, ferries and bridges.

The name ‘Faroe’ means ‘Island of Sheep’. It is said that an Irish monk passed the island during his voyage, and saw an ‘Island of Sheep’ and a ‘Paradise of Birds’. By this way, the name ‘Faroe’ came into existence.

Christianity is the main religion here. They have their own culture and language. Traditional whale hunt is the part of their culture. This hunting is also called ‘Grind’. The islands are rocky with low peaks. Some of the islands are having the highest sea cliffs in the world. Many of the Faroe Islands have more length than width.

Most of the people come to Faroe Islands because of its mind blowing beautiful natural beauty, extremely fresh air, exotic lush green mountains and the deep blue ocean.

Location: Denmark, about 402 kms directly North of Scotland. They are situated in the heart of the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic 

Climate: Sub-polar oceanic climate, cold, wet and windy. Cool summers and cold winters.

You will have to wear warm woolens most of the time in summers. Wear good woolens in winters. Carry rain coats and umbrellas along with you as a precaution.

Best time to visit: Between June and September, when the weather is more or less comfortable and not too wet.

How to reach:

By Sea: Being an Island, you have the option to take a cruise ship to get here. You can avail various cruises online from European countries and enjoy a romantic cruise, till you reach your destination.

By Air: Vagar Airport is the only airport that can be found in Faroe Islands and hence, in order to travel by air, this should be your destination. This airport is well connected to the major airports in Europe and so, you will not have a problem catching a flight to get here

Tórshavn Cathedral

Location: Tórshavn, Faroe Islands

Timings: Open all days. Timings of Monday: 2:30 p.m.- 4:30 p.m., Tuesday – Friday: 2:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday: 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.

This 18th century Church is one of the major landmarks of the town. Its 17th century old altar piece is its main attraction, with the exquisite painting of the last supper. Its royal interior and splendid paintings are the reflection of Faroe culture. The unique stained glasses of the Church look magnificent. The outside of the cathedral looks like a perfect picture for a wallpaper or a postcard. The music of the church bells and the calm atmosphere of the cathedral are a truly touching experience for your soul.

Nólsoy

Location: Nólsoy is an island and village in Central Faroe Islands, 4 kms East of the capital Tórshavn in Streymoy

How to reach: By boat or ferry

This island village is located on the Eastern side of the Tórshavn town. You have to take a ferry ride of twenty minutes to visit this island. The first thing that catches your eye is the Light House, which looks like a man with the white coat with red ‘hat’. You will feel a bit lonely here but you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, as this calm island has very less population. The open ocean with mountains on the backdrop and the traditional bright colored buildings look spectacular.

From the little harbor, you will enter the village by passing through a portal that is made of the cheekbones of a huge sperm whale. Soon, you will be in the middle of the village, surrounded by small and colorful wooden houses. You will be intrigued to see the cozy small houses, which are placed extremely close to each other to give shelter to each other, from the cold and salty winter storms. The mountain that gives Nólsoy its characteristic look is green and lush on the side that faces Tórshavn . On the other side, it consists of impressive vertical bird-cliffs.

Kirkjubømúrurin

Location: Kirkjubøur, Faroe Islands

Timings: Open all days

The Kirkjubømúrurin or the Magnus Cathedral is the ruins of a 700 year old medieval Roman Catholic Cathedral,s located in the village Kirkjubøu in Faroe Island. Just behind the ruins of the church is the graveyard. There is a sense of history attached to this place, along with a stunning backdrop of the ocean meeting with the land.

It was built by Bishop Erlendur about the year 1300, but the building was never completed. The cathedral is in an unfinished state to this day. The building has never had a roof. Magnus Cathedral is the largest and most beautiful medieval building in the Faroe Islands.

Hestur

Location: Hestur, Faroe Islands

How to reach: By boat

This coastal village of Faroe Islands is a place where you can enjoy the natural beauty of the sea, the exotic mountains and the beauteous island, without any disturbance of the crowd. You can see a wide range of rare birds here. You can see these native birds on the bird-tours arranged from Tórshavn. But one thing that you should take care of is that for bird watching, the weather should be good and clear.

This place got its name ‘Hestur’ from the word ‘Horse’ in Faroe language. The Northern part of Hestur is high and steep, but then the height decreases towards further South. Up on the mountain lies the spectacular Fagradal Lake, and not least is to mention the Cliffs of Hestur, which are a first class experience.

Skansin Fort

Location: Kerjum , Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, it is located on a hill beside the port of Torshavn

Timings: Open 24 hrs

The Skansin Fort was built in the year 1580, for the protection of the town from the pirates, by Magnus Heinason. In 1780, the Fort was considerably expanded. After this, for many years, it was rebuilt many times. This fort was the military base of the British in the Second World War. This fort gives the best view of the harbor and the town from its Light House. The entry here is free.
