Mellieħa, Malta

Mellieha is a tourist resort village, which is popular for its sandy beaches and natural environment. It is a small town in the Northern Region of Malta. It was one of the first ten perishes of Malta. It still existed in 1436, but it was abandoned in the late 16th century, because the North of Malta was no longer safe due to raids by Muslim corsairs. During the early years of Hospitaller rule in Malta, Mellieha remained abandoned. In the late 16th century, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieha was rebuilt.

The town of Mellieha stands on a group of hills on the North-West coast of the main island of Malta. The town overlooks Mallieha Bay, which includes Ghadira Bay. It is the largest sandy beach in Malta. The large Marfa Peninsula lies at the North of Mellieha which includes several small bays.

Mellieha is a popular tourist destination during summers. It is awarded the title of ‘European Destination of Excellence’. It is well known for Ghadira Bay and Golden Bay.

Location: Malta, 13 miles from Valletta.

Climate: Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot, while winters are mild. Wear cottons in summers and woolens in winters.

St. Agatha's Tower

Location: Triq Tad-Dahar, Il-Mellieħa, Malta

Timings:  Winter Timings from 16th September – 14th June: 10:00 a.m.– 4:00 p.m. Summer Timings  from 15th June – 15th September: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.– 6:00 p.m.

Due to its red color, it is also called the Red Tower and is dedicated to St. Agatha. This 17th century watchtower is a famous tourist attraction of Malta. This historic place was an important piece of defense due to its pivotal position. For the visitors, it is a perfect spot to get 360 degree view of the sea and the town. It is the place where you want to be at the time of Sunset, to see the sun drowning in the sea.

Ċirkewwa

Location: North Malta

Timings: Open all days

This harbor is one of the main transport hubs of the Mellieha. It plays as the base for the visitors travelling to the Comino islands and other parts. Ferries come and go from Ċirkewwa. Nowadays, it is becoming famous as the Scuba hub of the country. Under the sea water, there are many caves, arches and tunnels worth exploring with your scuba gear on.
